Founded by renowned oud virtuoso Maged Kildan, the ensemble embodies a musical vision that combines depth, spirituality, and rhythmic energy.
At the heart of the quintet is the powerful interplay of oud, qanun, trumpet, drums, and electric bass. The quintet is led by Maged’s son, Kildan Maged. The talented qanun player, singer, and percussionist gives the band its special image. The core line-up also includes bassist and electric guitarist Tilman Brandl, versatile trumpeter Sascha Lüer and Japanese percussionist Miko Watanabe. The quintet is regularly joined by renowned guest musicians such as jazz legend Wolfgang Lackerschmid and drummer Andreas Keller. These musicians blend their influences to create a distinctive sound. Supported by a deep, grooving bass, the music unfolds, sometimes meditative and trance-like, sometimes lively and danceable.
The quintet’s music is deeply rooted in the Sufi tradition of Iraq, without shying away from stylistic experimentation. Their concerts are sound journeys that take the audience on a spiritual and emotional voyage of discovery – from Baghdad to Berlin, from tradition to innovation.
With performances at festivals such as the Klangfest München and the Kulturhaus Milbertshofen, KILDAN World Quintet has impressively proven its exceptional position in the European world music scene. Their music is not only a dialogue between instruments, but also a dialogue between cultures – open, respectful, and deeply human.
An experience for all the senses – and a statement for cultural understanding through music.
