He began his musical journey at the age of twelve, studying guitar with free-jazz guitarist Helmut Joe Sachse, and later continued his training with Birgit Berndt. He was eventually discovered by the Hochschule für Musik “Franz Liszt” in Weimar, where he studied classical guitar and jazz from 1987 to 1992.
Zenker is renowned for his exceptional finger technique on the nylon-string guitar and his ability to make the instrument sound like an entire orchestra. His musical spectrum is remarkably broad, ranging from classical concert guitar and flamenco influences to medieval music, world music elements, improvisation, and electroacoustic soundscapes. He frequently incorporates unconventional sound sources, live electronics, and live looping to open up new sonic dimensions.
Since the 1990s, Falk has toured internationally as a solo artist and with various ensembles, including the Nu:n ensemble, which he founded himself. In addition to his concert and touring activities, he composes music for film, theater, radio plays, and literary projects. He also creates experimental sound installations and offers music as a means of personal and sensory exploration.
Falk Zenker has released numerous solo albums, including Landschaften, Cinema, Gedankenreise, and Falkenflug, and has published sheet music of his works with various publishers. His compositions and performances are characterized by a dense and expressive musical language in which tradition and modernity merge in a distinctive way.
Today, Falk lives and works near Weimar and in the Fichtelgebirge region, where he continues to be active as a guitarist, sound artist, and composer.
